The clinical-scientific interface of tissue repair

As one of the most challenging task in the future of wound repair we envision the transfer of novel findings in basic research into the clinical settings. Conditions of impaired healing, e.g. chronic skin ulcers associated with diabetes mellitus, vascular disease, ageing, excessive scarring, as well as inflammatory diseases, represent major clinical and socio-economical problems. The development of innovate strategies to improve tissue repair and regeneration is therefore an important task. However, one of the most prevailing challenge in the field of tissue repair is to precisely identify underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms of the pathology of the impaired healing condition. Therefore, in a translation approach we study impaired healing conditions in the human system and we are aiming at identifying surrogate markers to assess prognosis and healing progression of chronic wounds. To achieve our goal we are searching to strengthen the close cooperation among clinicians, scientists and industry, which is fundamental for the development of effective therapeutic strategies for healing impaired conditions.

Our efforts are patient-centered and to further advance modern diagnostic and therapeutic approaches we recently established the Wound Healing Center between the Departments of Dermatology and Vascular Surgery at the University Hospital of Cologne.
